STEPS – SOCIAL TEACHING AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM SUPPORT

STEPS is a school program designed for children ages 3 till 12. The purpose of the program is to prepare children with the skills they need to be able to learn.

What is School Readiness;

  • Being able to open the lunch box.
  • Being able to identify our photo and bags.
  • Being able to ask for help to your teacher when you need it.
  • Being able to say ‘stop’ when you don’t like whats happening around you.
  • Being able to follow 3 step instruction.
  • Being able to persist when problem solving a puzzle or a challenging game.
  • Being able to wait for your turn.
  • Being able to wear your own jumpers and shoes.

Our STEPs program includes:

 

  • Assessing each child’s cognitive and language skills with a comprehensive child assessment instrument when the child enters and again before the child leaves the program to improve program planning and implementation, communicate with parents, and promote school readiness.
  • Providing comprehensive program content and intentional instructional practice aligned with the state early childhood learning guidelines and standards and based on early childhood research and professional practice that is focused on children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills and development and prepares children for the transition to school, including early literacy and language skills.
  • Coordinating appropriate school transition with parents and school teachers.
  • Involving parents in program planning and decision making.
